Om Nom Nom Shhhh….
Down in the basement of SecretLondon towers, where they put me to keep me away from sunshine, I have been watching the boards. In between discussing gypsy clubs and telling people to knock on the ‘Not a Brothel’ door in Meard Street, I’ve noticed that most of the merry not-so-secretive Londoners have a common interest. My first pick of the discussions will focus on what Londoners are hungering for in the city, so lets have a look at the food menu.
Thai
It seems a lot of people want more choice than green or red curry. ‘CATS’ on Stroud Green Road got a lot of votes. Hal Miller put it so eloquently I will venture towards it next time I’m out north, “Apart from the Tuk tuk in the window, the heavy bond-villianesque outrageous south east Asian decour[sic], the signed celecbrity[sic[ photos on the walls and currency under the glass tables, Cats is one of the best Thai restuarants[sic[ in the world.”
Venture down south of the river and you’ll find The Pepper Tree in Clapham common, as voted for by a fair few SecretLondon people. Andrea Adrianna Wintour backs it fully, “I must agree that ‘The Pepper Tree’ in Clapham Common serves the MOST amazing Thai food I’ve ever had. The prices are great too.”
There’s just two of them that peaked my interest, have a read to find your own eastern promise.
Spanish/Tapas
From east to west there is a lot of love and debate for the best Tapas in London. A lot of people seem to love Galicia on Portobello Rd and, as it’s “not what you expect from the outside” (according to Richard Wharram) it suits SecretLondon just fine.
Over in the docklands area there’s a lovely place called El Faro which gets some kudos from Spanish ex-pat Marta Luis: “When I miss Spain, I don’t even bother to cook at home: they serve REAL Spanish food and drinks. AWESOME!”
You can see the discussion in full here.
Vegetarian
Lastly, the big question in the food fight on SecretLondon is about Veggie and Vegan restaurants.Green Note in Camden is mentioned, as is the Inspiral Lounge (Both of which I can vouch for) both of which offering excellent music events. Lots of Veggie fans love Rootmaster, the old converted bus sitting near Brick Lane both for the love of eating on busses as much as the meals.
Food for Thought in Covent Garden (“Cheap and cheerful” as Anne-Cecile Bertrand says) is only surpassed by The Gate in Hammersmith on the voting front. Helen Magowan loves it and also told us that Aldo Zilli is opening a vegetarian restaurant, confirmed later in the thread by Emma Donnan to be opening this weekend on Dean St. You heard it hear fir…second, and you can see the full platter of recommendations here.
Anyway, that is just a taster of the foodies giving a good smattering of helpful hints. I’ll be back in a bit with another rundown. Oh and hopefully I’ll have pictures what Tiffany calls the ‘London Love-in’ that will be our website launch weekend.
