The ‘secret city’ meme goes global

A secret trend is spreading over facebook. Following the success of secretlondon, facebook groups of cities all around the world have been popping up! Not only is it exciting that the format and general concept is being internationally adopted, it is also the choice to use the word secret by foreign language speaking countries, for example ‘Secret Berlin’ and ‘Secret Paris’.

It is also nice to see that the bulk of the new secret cities are in the UK. I am already in contact with the most successful alternative secret city, Brighton and I would love to hear from the secret city creators from across the country.

So the secret city concept is proving popular. As one comment in a recent blog entitled Why the Secret London Facebook Group is so Successful said, ‘I actually want subjectivity when I’m seeking advice about a new city.’ Community led information may soon be overtaking the traditional ‘review’ formula as part of a world wide phenomenon for a new way of exploring a city.

Here is a list of the other secret city facebook groups I have so far discovered and their membership size:

  1. Secret Brighton 7427
  2. Secret Bristol 7225
  3. Secret Oxford 6000
  4. Secret Singapore 4527

    Hey Tiffany,

I added you on Twitter, thanks for following me. My friend and I have created a secret Toronto group, and would like your help/collaboration. Any tricks to help us grow it? I’m a business grad, from a top Canadian business school working in IT Strategy for a major bank, so if you need any help on your team for Canada/North America just let me know. I don’t mind volunteering for fun.

    All the best,
    Daniel Caplan

    Hi Tiffany,

You can add Secret Belfast to your ever growing list. I’ve been tracking your progress and am looking forward to seeing how we can link into your new (hopefully global!) site.

    Good work,

    Joel (Secret Belfast)

    Hi Tiffany,

It even has reached the mid of the Atlantic Ocean … twice … Secret Madeira and Secret Funchal. These are relatively new and … from my experience with the way of life here on Madeira … it will grow slowly ;-)

But how knows …. maybe we will discover one of worlds largest secret ever … we will discover that Madeira in fact is … the lost Atlantis. Lets just see and wait.

Keep up the good work and all the best.

    Don Amaro (Madeira)
